THE EMBASSY OF THE FREE MIND

The Embassy of the Free Mind in the House with the Heads will be a platform for free and contrarian thought. The Embassy offers room for exhibitions, tours, presentations, debates and conferences. The Ritman Library, with its wealth of knowledge and its unique collection, will be the vibrant heart of the Embassy of the Free Mind. The collection of some 25,000 books tells the story of the Western spiritual and philosophical tradition and is, like the House of the Heads itself, inseparably connected to Amsterdam and its history of free and open thinking. freedom of speech and freedom of the press. As in the Golden Age, the House with the Heads will welcome the free spirits and independent thinkers of yesterday, today and tomorrow, from the Netherlands and abroad and be a home to artists and scientists, entrepreneurs and anyone seeking and offering inspiration and power of thought.Powered by The Worldheart Foundation

THE RITMAN LIBRARY ON THE MOVE

For all of June, July and August we worked very hard to prepare the more than 25,000 books and manuscripts. We were fortunate to be able to enlist the highly professional services of the firm of De Wit movers. It’s so odd to see our treasure room without any of the rare books on the shelves! We have now moved all the books from the Bloemstraat to the various storage facilities. After 32 years we have closed the doors at the Bloemstraat. Moving phase 1: completed.

THE RENOVATION

In September the renovation of the House with the Heads will start. The house was built in 1622, so to preserve the house and the library for future generations, the foundation will completely be replaced and the entire house will be renovated. We will keep you posted!

THE DIGITISATION PROJECT

Thanks to Dan Brown and the Prins Bernhard Cultuur Fonds the core collection (4,600 books and manuscripts) of the library will be digitized. In the near future, it will be possible not only to consult the books physically in the new building but also online throughout the world. This project fulfills a major objective of the Hermetically Open project by making the core collection accessible online through digitization and integration of the material in the new online catalogue. In September Picturae, a company specialized in digitisation of heritage material, will start on the first batch of books lined up for digitisation!
